![]() What infectious disease do you think is the biggest global killer? Malaria? AIDS? If you guessed those, you'd be wrong. Each year, 1.3 million people will die because of malaria. In the same year, 2 million people will die of tuberculosis; 2.2 million from diarrhea; and 3 million people from HIV/AIDS. But in that same year, over 4 million people will die because of a lower respiratory infection. A majority of those deaths are caused by pneumonia. In fact, lower respiratory infections are the biggest killers in the world today.
Yet, when surveyed, roughly 90% of people surveyed didn't know this. In fact, tuberculosis is a type of acute respiratory infection - although the World Health Organization (WHO) counts deaths caused by tuberculosis separately. When combined, these respiratory infections would amount to 6 million deaths a year. To learn more about this killer disease, use the navigation to the left of the screen. The information presented on this website is organized linearly - you might want to start with the topic at the top and work your way down to discover the true solution to the biggest killer disease in the world today. ![]() Michael G (14) and Patrick G (12), Doors to Diplomacy 2007 |
