The Sebald Code
The Sebald Code is mentioned numerous times in Lemony Snicket's Unauthorized Autobiography. It was developed by Dr. Sebald, a film director, who used it to hide message in the scripts of his movie for other V.F.D Members to find.
How it Works:
A V.F.D Member would be alerted to a hidden message by the sound of somthing ringing (usually a bell). The first word after the ringing sound is the coded word. The following words appear after every tenth word. To show that the message had ended, there would be another ringing sound within ten words of the last coded word.
Example:
*bell ringing*
Voice 1: Jimmy, could you please pass the brocoli? My brocoli plant has died, just last week. I named my brocoli plant after dear Olaf.
Voice 2: That horrible tick who lived on him, poisened then brutally murdered him.
Voice 1: I can't believe that other large, furry dog saw him, but didn't help! Olaf's now in doggy heaven....
*bell ringing*
Voice 2: Jimmy! More brocoli please!
Message:
Jimmy died. Olaf murdered him. |
