“Conflict is inevitable, but combat is optional” - Max Lucade
There are currently 25 million refugees of international crisis in the world, including asylum-seekers, internally displaced people and stateless people. There are a myriad of reasons as to why they have fled their countries – but all causes have one thing in common: they portray the rising conflict being enforced by war in our world today. No matter the causes of international conflict, what is important is how we solve them.
Over the years, as different conflicts have been resolved, we have seen first-hand what works and what fails. Force is not always the best way to solve these problems. As Mary Parker Follett once said, “There are three ways of dealing with difference: domination, compromise, and integration. By domination only one side gets what it wants; by compromise neither side gets what it wants; by integration we find a way by which both sides may get what they wish.”
This website addresses three "wars on peace" - the conflict between Israel and Palestine, the humanitarian crisis in Darfur, and the political problems of Myanmar - in order to see what causes conflicts and what we can ultimately do in order to help resolve them.
Follow the navigation at the top of the page. First, we'll learn about what these three conflicts are, their causes, and current attempts at peace. Then we'll learn about the similarities between the three conflicts and come to a conclusion as to what the international community can do to solve them.
We conducted a variety of interviews with many people, including refugees who have fled Myanmar, the former Executive Director of UNICEF, and a high ranking official of the UNHCR - don't forget to read them here. Read the results of a survey distributed to High School students about international conflicts.
